Harlem Hospital Expansion
Beginning as an old mansion, Harlem Hospital has grown into a tremendous modern complex. The Harlem Hospital expansion includes the renovation of the existing Martin Luther King Pavilion and construction of a 190,000 s/f pavilion on Lenox Avenue between 136th and 137th streets. The new pavilion features a stunning 429-panal curtain-wall system depicting images from the Pursuit of Happiness, a tribute to the neighborhood history and culture.
The new Patient Pavilion will house an emergency room with separate walk-in and ambulance entrances, 6 surgical suites, intensive care unit, diagnostic center and a new main entrance for the hospital on Lenox Avenue. The addition of this pavilion will create one large building complex for the hospital by connecting the Martin Luther King Pavilion and the Ron L. Brown Pavilions.
The expansion will also improve the Medical Surgical and Inpatient Unit in the existing Martin Luther King Pavilion, connect the outpatient clinics with such services as radiology and laboratories, and bring maternal and newborn services onto one floor. The Labor and Delivery Unit and features five spacious, family-centered birthing suites complete with full kitchens, flat-screen televisions with Internet access, sofa beds and private bathrooms with whirlpool tubs.
