THE FREEDOM TOWER
Owner/Developer: Sliverstein Properties, Inc.
The Building, A Tribute
Extending the long tradition of American ingenuity in high-rise construction, Freedom Tower rises to 1776 feet above ground level topped by a magnificent lighted architectural spire. Below, an 80 foot-high plaza level greets visitors and 69 office floors comprise the majority of the building, replacing more than one quarter of all the office space lost on September 11, 2001. Freedom Tower recaptures the New York skyline, reasserts Lower Manhattan’s preeminence as a business center and establishes a new civic icon for our country. It is a memorable architectural landmark for our city and our nation – a building whose simplicity and clarity of form will remain fresh and timeless.
At 1362 feet and 1368 feet, an observation deck and glass parapet will commemorate the heights of the original Twin Towers. This tall, pointed structure in the spirit of great New York City icons such as the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building evokes the slender, tapering triangular forms of these two great midtown landmarks.
An Architectural Landmark
Since the ceremonial groundbreaking on June 4, 2004, the construction of Freedom Tower has steadily progressed, with an estimated completion in 2012. In 2006, explosions to clear bedrock were conducted and the concrete foundation was put down, utilizing RFID technology to better monitor the hardening of the substance. The following year, a row of steel columns was put into place and the tower’s footings and foundation were nearly completed. Currently, workers are implementing the steel infrastructure of the building, soon to be visible.
As Freedom Tower continues to rise, all of New York looks forward to having the bold and simple icon in the sky that speaks about the future and hope as it rises into the sky in a faceted, crystalline form filled with, and reflecting light.
