ATLANTIC YARDS
Owner/Developer: Forest City Ratner Companies
Revitalizing Downtown Brooklyn
Designed by renowned architect Frank Gehry, the Atlantic Yards project combines commercial and residential properties that will result in a 16-building complex representing the future of downtown Brooklyn. The $4 billion project will transform an underutilized industrial area into a facility of tremendous economic growth for the city, creating over 15,000 union construction jobs and thousands of permanent positions in addition to increased tax revenue.
Atlantic Yards sits on the most vibrant and animated intersection in the borough, situated above the Atlantic Avenue-Pacific Street subway station, the third largest in the city. The buildings are sized and spaced to minimize bulk in order to best meld with the existing neighborhoods while bringing more activity to the downtown area. Inviting walkways throughout the complex lead to bursts of open space for the public to enhance and enliven the previously dreary area. As the largest private investment in Brooklyn’s history, a focus on building community will be evident in the ongoing events that bring together children and adults alike.
Building Business, Culture and Community
As a way to serve the economic, social and environmental needs of Brooklyn, the Atlantic Yards project will feature:
- 6,430 units of mixed-income housing, with 50% set aside specifically for middle and low income families to meet housing needs in this rapidly expanding borough
- 336,000 square feet of office space
- 247,000 square feet of retail space
- A 165,000 square foot hotel with 180 rooms
- The Barclays Center, a state-of-the-art sports and entertainment arena that will become the new home of the Brooklyn Nets, Brooklyn’s very own NBA franchise
- Eight acres of intricately designed publicly accessible open space
