Andy Mei is a carpenter apprentice with the New York City District Council of Carpenters and a member of Local 2287 specializing in flooring. Born in Canton, China, he was raised to believe that hard work pays off. After moving to the US in 1985, he focused on making a good life for himself and his family by learning how to install carpets.
After a few years of working for companies that paid minimum wage, Andy decided to move on by looking for a job where he could make the most of his skills and would have the opportunity to make something of himself. Andy knew he wanted to work with his hands and decided that learning more about carpentry was the way to go. He decided to apply to the Carpenters Union apprentice program and started his journey to his current career.
Andy describes the Carpenters Union as “a family of hardworking individuals who want to make a future for their families and work with pride in each other and their union.” He states that “the union gives me a feeling of belonging….[and] has helped me gain confidence in myself and has taught me many leadership skills. It has played a big part in who I am today.”
