The New York City District Council of Carpenters Women’s Committee recently launched its new website, www.unionwomencarpenters.com, where women in the New York carpenters union can share, support and learn from each other’s experiences, to promote growth on both personal and professional levels and to become more actively involved at all levels, in a unique forum.
The NYCDC Women’s Committee grew directly out of the first International Carpenters Sisters in the UBC conference in 2002, where only seven sisters were sent to the conference out of the two-hundred-and-fifty women in the NYCDCC. Five of them decided to start a steering committee upon their return, and now the committee has 450 women members. The committee holds quarterly meetings and is directed by a Steering Committee comprised of eleven sisters.
The website is dedicated to strengthening the union and supporting their members by letting people get involved. On the site, you can find work & benefit resources, Apprenticeship Program information, helpful “union pride” information such as Daily Picket Duty Locations and Non-Union Report form, as well as a forum and helpful links.
Mission
The Women’s Committee’s mission is to create a network of active sisters that will provide avenues for women to address issues, promote strength, unity and retention in order to increase and diversify the number of females in the NYCDCC-UBC.
Toward the realization of that goal, they have developed a mentoring program for women apprentices, informational workshops on our benefit programs and departments within our union, guest speakers on a variety of subjects, and social events to build solidarity and community.
